WEST COAST OF NAMIBIA

​Yachts can clear in and out in both Luderitz or Walvis Bay. All yachts must attend Port Health, Immigration and Customs offices for clearance. Please ensure you have cleared into the country before you begin to explore it’s beauty.​

The Northern west coast of Namibia is known as the Skeleton coast: it is scenic and exciting, and many travellers by boat sometimes drop anchor in sheltered bays like Hottentots Bay and also Spencer Bay. However, this is an exposed lee shore and one must take into consideration weather and ocean conditions and in rough weather rather stay in deeper waters.

​The whole West coast of Namibia from the Orange River up to the Kunene is designated as a National Park and falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment, Flora and Tourism. There are some areas where mining licences have been allocated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and landing from seaward is strictly prohibited, other than in an emergency. Official permission is required to enter these parks. All the Islands on the Namibian coast are declared sanctuaries and the same restrictions apply.

​Berthing/mooring/anchoring.

Depending on whether or not the diamond vessels are in port, there are 2 or 3 private heavy moorings available which can be allocated via Port Control and a person by name Andy. Additional moorings are available from Lüderitz Yacht Club. An anchorage area is available but some distance from the yacht club. Using the Waterfront jetty costs N$50/day. Alternatively, use the Yacht Club slipway or beach for dingy landing.

Facilities available to visitors including showers, restaurant, take-aways, bar. Open 1600 to 2200 weekdays, 1200 to 2200 weekends. Showers available outside hours by arrangement.

There are no alongside facilities for water or fuel. General fuel service station for diesel, petrol and oils within walking distance of the yacht club. Fresh water is available at the yacht club but must provide own cans.

​Repairs

Seven Seas Ldz Project.

The vision and mission of The Seven Seas Ldz Project is to A. Promote Namibia and more specifically Lüderitz as a possible stop-over enroute to the Caribbean via St Helena B. Bring alternative energy options to remote communities on Islands via sail yacht. C. Research in sustainable development for remote Islands. D. Add value to the food chain by introducing knowledge/training on fermentation of green produce to last longer while at sea. E. Alternative approaches to tools used on yachts like using air tools powered by a diving cylinder in emergency. F. Research centre with fully operational test biogas centre is based in Lüderitz and open to visitors from yachts.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES AND USEFUL INFORMATION

Call Port Control on VHF Channel 14 or 16 for permission to enter the port.

Walvis Bay Yacht Club is the Agent for all yachts visiting Walvis Bay. Proceed to WBYC on the southern side of the port and anchor.

Report to Antoinette at WBYC. An Agent fee of N$500.00 per person (except children under 12 years) is payable, which includes:

​

1. Completion of Documents required for Immigration & Customs and reporting arrival to Port Health and Water wing Police, and taking you by car to Immigration/Customs for inward/outward clearance

2. Free Potable Water available at the end of the WBYC jetty.

3. Collection and delivery of laundry or using the Club’s Laundry facility at a small cost.

4. Driving you to and from the shops/hospital or doctor’s appointments if required, or assisting with car rental.

5. Trash disposal.

6. Tie-up at yacht club jetty for your dingy.

7. Contact with yacht club support members or other suppliers for repairs.

Temporary membership of WBYC, with a Membership Card which is valid as long as your VISA is valid, gives access to the club facilities, hot showers and a 10% discount on food and beverages at the Yacht Club Restaurant (Rojo’s).​

Office Hours: WBYC office is open daily 09h00 – 116h00, but clearances can be done up to 21h00 and during the weekends with advance notice. Saturdays from 09h00-12h.00, Sundays Closed, unless any prior notification was received of eta.

Departure:​

After outward clearance is done, call Port Control on channel 14 or 16 for permission to exit the harbour.​

Anchoring: All boats will be at anchor, at spaces allocated to visiting boats. The anchorage area is just past the southern end of the commercial harbor. Space is quite restricted due to dredging, although the holding is good with a minimum three meters depth between Pelican Point and WBYC. Therefore, it is not necessary to use the main shipping channel.

It is highly suggested you do NOT enter the harbour area during the night. Rather anchor at nearby Pelican Point until the next morning. The prevailing South Westerly wind changes to a strong wind from the N and this creates a significant swell in the anchorage and harbour, with breaking waves at times. Mornings tend to be calmer, with the wind picking up afternoons. The Pelicans and Seals here are king!
